The daughter of the statistician, Professor R R Kuczynski, Ursula BEURTON was recruited as a Soviet intelligence officer in the early 1930s. Between 1931 and 1935 she and her then husband Rudolf Hamburger worked in China and in 1936 she carried out a successful intelligence mission in Poland. By 1938 she was in Switzerland, responsible for the intelligence network later known as the Rote Drei, for which she recruited Alexander Foote. She married Leon BEURTON and moved to the UK in 1941 and became the channel of communication for the atom spy Klaus Fuchs. Leon BEURTON was born in the UK and joined the International Brigade in Spain in 1936. He was introduced to Ursula BEURTON through Alexander Foote and was active in the Rote Drei as a wireless operator
