Administrative / biographical background:

The Highways (Traffic and Safety) Division dealt with road traffic regulations and restrictions, and considered road safety policy and propaganda. It provided the Secretariat for the Departmental Committee on Road Safety and carried out the management of Road Fund grants for approved road safety schemes conducted by local authorities. The division was concerned with the Road Traffic Acts in connection with driving tests and driving licences, as well as administering the closure of roads under various acts.
