Description: |
Otto DIETERGAERTNER: South African/German. Born in South West Africa, DIETERGAERTNER went to Germany in 1937 to study medicine. After serving in the Wehrmacht in the Polish campaign, he was eventually recruited into the Abwehr and sent, together with Herbert Heins TRIBUTH, joined later by an Indian called OBED, through France to Ireland with the aim of reaching England and engaging in sabotage. They were arrested on arrival in Ireland, tried and sentenced to seven years' imprisonment. Later analysis suggested that TRIBUTH and DIETERGAERTNER were members of the Lehr Regiment Brandenburg, a military unit controlled by the Abwehr, made up mostly of expatriate Germans and extensively used for sabotage operations |
