Maria Ignatievna BUDBERG: Russian. In the 1920s the Countess BUDBERG was suspected of a Soviet intelligence role by the Estonians, one of whose nationals she married. In the 1940s and 50s she was investigated by the British because of her connections with suspected Soviet agents. In the meantime she led a colourful life in various European countries and was the mistress in turn of Bruce Lockhart in Moscow, of Maxim Gorky and later of H G Wells |
