Franz VON PAPEN: German. VON PAPEN, as Military Attache in the German Embassy in Washington during the First World War, ran what was described as a small army of spies inside and outside the USA. In 1915 the US authorities declared him persona non grata.The file contains evidence of his spying from that period, including part of his correspondence seized at Nazareth in 1917 when General Allenby captured the Turkish H.Q. in which he had been working as an Intelligence staff officer. VON PAPEN was later to become the German Chancellor who ''sold the Reich'' to Hitler |
