Description: |
Copy of part of the memorial of Robinson Kittoe, East Farleigh. Having joined the Navy at a very early age, he has suffered many misfortunes, including severe injury, capture and imprisonment, serious illness and the loss of personal possessions and money. He has held various posts, due in part to patronage of Sir John Laforey and Lord Spence, including becoming Purser of a gunship, where he witnessed the capture of Minorca. He has not received the rewards usually enjoyed by a person in his various positions and has incurred considerable outlay when employing staff. He has served as Secretary to Sir Thomas graves and was present with Nelson at Copenhagen. He has held appointments as Agent for Prisoners at Chatham, as Clerk of the Survey at Plymouth and as Storekeeper at Deptford, before finally becoming Clerk of the Cheque at Woolwich. His health is now broken and he is unable to support his family and asks for a pension. |
