Content: Folios 24-25. Letter from Charles Bond, Clerk to the Guardians of the Axminster Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission. He requests a ruling on the case of Charles Welch a 22 year old crippled pauper from Membury. He was in receipt of three shillings weekly from a club and the guardians discontinued his relief. He appealed unsuccessfully against this and applied for admission to the workhouse. As the club refused to pay the board the cost of his maintenance the clerk advised the relieving officer to withhold admission until the Commission had been consulted. Annotated: applicant not destitute, guardians justified. Paper Number: 1250/A/1843. Poor Law Union Number 76. Counties: Devon and Dorset.
