Description:
Content: Folios 23-24. Letter from J and W Rees Mogg [John Rees Mogg and William Rees Mogg] of Temple Cloud near Bristol, Clerks to the Guardians of the Clutton Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Board, in reply to the letter of 20 February concerning the accusations made by the Schoolmaster of the Workhouse [Richard Jones] in his letter to Mr Ruddock, Inspector of Schools. The guardians find that several of these were inaccurate. 1. He had not spoken to the guardians himself but his wife who had been called before them for another matter. She requested they be allowed to take meals in their own room, but permission was refused. 2. It was not 'through the master's persuasion' as he was not involved. 3. The schoolmaster has not 'purchased all the tea and butter I made use of' as more than half the time he has had rations served with the other officers. 4. The guardians found it inconvenient to serve officers other than the master and matron in their own apartments and passed a resolution that all meals must be taken together at the stated times to maintain discipline. The guardians are unanimous in not wanting to rescind this rule. Annotated: The schoolmaster and mistress were appointed before the present master of the workhouse who has implemented some successful changes resulting in a lack of cordiality between them. The school master and mistress should not have made this irregular representation but at the same time the eating arrangements are not strictly correct. They are looking for new positions.
