Description:
Content: Folios 395-396. Letter from George Cornwall, Vicar of Publow, near Pensford, Bristol, to the Poor Law Commission concerning the case of Joyce Bryant of the parish of Compton Dando in the Keynsham Poor Law Union. He notes that Bryant had, accordingly to the coroner, Robert Uphill, died of starvation shortly after seeking refuge with her daughter in his parish. He requested that for the benefit of the public at large the Commissioners should inquire into the behaviour of the relieving officers in the two parishes in question, and suggests that guardians should generally be required to instruct their relieving officers to offer assistant to all applicants taking into account the assistance that should be given to the weak, timid and ignorant who might be affected by the timing of their applications. Annotated: acknowledge and promise attention to case; write to coroner for copies of depositions. Paper Number: 4262/B/1847. Poor Law Union Number 374. Counties: Somerset.
