Description:
Content: Folio 27. Draft letter from the Poor Law Commission, to William Wilson, Mansfield Poor Law Union, South Normanton, Alfreton, regarding the punishment of paupers for refusing to work. He acknowledges the receipt of a letter dated the 1 February, 1845 regarding the 5 & 6 Vic. c 57. They state that the Commissioners do not agree with the view taken by the magistrate. The Commission see nothing in the terms of that letter, to require that the 'task of work' which may 'exacted of the paupers', should be profitable. The words 'in return' for the food etc. appear to them to mean that the labour may be imposed by the Commissioners, as the 'condition on which the relief will be afforded', not necessarily a means of securing the reimbursement of such relief. It is the 'task of work' itself, and not the producer of it, that the Commissioners understand be the 'return' for the relief. Annotated: annexe to the mill some apparatus to raise water or wash potatoes, or any other kind of work. Paper Number: 1686/B/1845. Poor Law Union Number 337. Counties: Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
