Description:
Content: Folios 127-128. Letter from James Burls of Manuden, to the Poor Law Commission, saying that at a meeting of the vicar, churchwardens, overseers and the ratepayers held this morning, he had been asked to accept the office of guardian of the poor of the parish in the Bishops Stortford Poor Law Union. He is a general shop keeper and wonders if he would be penalised, under section 77 of the Poor Law Act, for supplying goods under fair competition to any workhouse. If so he will decline the office, but he feels that traders should be represented among the guardians. Annotated: selling goods under the circumstances described will be subject to penalties written in the section 77 of the poor law. Poor Law Union Number 167. Counties: Hertfordshire and Essex.
