Description:

Folio 10: William Glansville, aged 25, leading seaman; case number 55; disease or hurt, febriela. Put on sick list, 11 July 1876 for febriela which yielded after a couple of days to quinine treatment but was followed by an attack of herpes lubiulis. The glands in hsi groin enlarged and his testicles became inflamed to require hospital treatment. He was discharged on 9 August 1876 to sick quarters in Yokohama.

Folio 10: Ebenezer Barker, aged 26, stoker; case number 56; disease or hurt, debility and diarrhoea. Put on the sick list, 30 June 1876 with debility, fastalgia, followed by diarrhoea. Discharged to sick quarters at Yokohama on 5 July 1876.

Folio 11: George Vincent, aged 25, private marine; case number 57; disease or hurt, debility and worms. Put on the sick list, 22 June 1876 with anemia, debility and ascais lumumides, which worms he has at several times passed both by mouth and rectum. His appetite was bad and he was losing so sent to sick quarters. Discharged 26 July to Yokohama.

Folio 11: William Seale, aged 19, ordinary seaman; case number 58; disease or hurt, bubo symp. Put on the sick list, 14 October 1876 with an enlarged and tender gland of left groin and not associated with syphilis and gonohorrea. Due to enlargement and suppuration of the bubo the patient required hospital treatment. Discharged on 6 November 1876 to sick quarters, Yokohama.

Folio 11: Joseph West, aged 37, stoker; case number 59; disease or hurt, colic. Placed on sick list, 18 October 1876 and sent to sick quarters in Yokohama a day later due to no improvement. There the characteristic blue line on the gums, symptomatic of lead poisoning appeared and returned to the ship cured within a few days.

Folio 11: Ebenezer Barker, aged 27, stoker; case number 60; disease or hurt, colic. Placed on the sick list, 24 October 1876. Like case number 59, the symptomatic blue line on the gums appeared and the patient was treated successfully. Both men had been employed in painting work below about the engine room. Discharged 17 November 1876 to duty.

Folio 11: William Thomas, aged 21, ordinary seaman; case number 61; disease or hurt, syphilis. Placed on the sick list, 31 October 1876 with sores around the penis having contracted syphilis fourteen days previously. Sores turned into a flat, oval indurated sore, and as the case threatened to be tedious was discharged to sick quarters in Yokohama on 6 November 1876.

Folio 11: Arthur Cole, aged 33, able seaman; case number 62; disease or hurt, vertigo. Put on sick list, 2 November 1876 at Yokohama complaining of vertigo and frontal headache. Patient had a long history of syphilis and was subsequently sent to hospital on 6 November 1876. He returned to the ship on 16 December 1876 to light duty.

Folio 11: Joseph Reynolds, aged 20, able seaman; case number 63; disease or hurt, amputation. Put on sick list, 2 March 1876 the sailor was employed at Singapore in sending up top gallant masts, got the fingers of his right hand jammed in the main-top-gallant mast rope block. The end of the middle finger being badly crushed it was removed by the knife and the second phalanx divided by forceps was the joint. The terminal phalanx of the ring finger was also removed but no further fingers were removed despite being badly contused. Discharged to duty on 10 April 1876 with a serviceable hand and was granted a pension certificate signed by the surgeon.

Folio 12: William Oswald Story, aged 16, midshipman; case number 64; disease or hurt, fracture humerus. Put on the sick list, 10 February off the Lawot river. Was engaged aloft on the fore-top whilst sails were being furled, caught hold of the topmast studding sail tuck which was loose, over balanced himself and fell from the top, striking the rigging and afterwards the fore-castle sails and then dropped overboard. He was immediately picked up and brought on board and attended to by the surgeon, C C Gudding as the staff surgeon was away up stream with the captain at Duallah Xungsa. On returning on board on the 12 February 1876, he found the patient had sustained a simple transverse fracture of the left humerus and severe scalp wound of the right temple. The fractured was placed in a temporary splint until the swelling disappeared and then placed in an inner angular splint and an outer straight one, bringing the arm across the body, The scalp wound was healed by the 15 March 1876. On the 25 March 1876 the splint was removed and the arm was completely healed barring a stiffness of the elbow. After being allowed some shore leave the officer returned to light duty after a few weeks and at the time of writing the surgeon reports that the officer has full use of his arm with no deformities or complaints resulting from the accident.

Folio 12: Mark Drewe, aged 35, private royal marine; case number 65; disease or hurt, syphilis. Put on sick list, 30 December 1876 with large foul looking sore. Contracted at Yokohama on 23 December 1876. Discharged to sick quarters at Yokohama on 30 December 1876.
