Description:

Folio 7: Henry Edward Northmore, aged 18, ordinary seaman; case number 32; disease or hurt, syphilis. Put on sick list, 30 March 1876 at Singapore, having contracted disease two weeks previously in same location. Discharged 9 April 1876 to Hospital in Singapore but transferred back on 19 May 1876 when he was sent back to the ship in consequence of leaving Singapore. He returned to duty on 3 July 1874 after spending 94 days sick since his first admission.

Folio 7: Hubert Williams, aged 32, master at arms; case number 33; disease or hurt, urehitus. Put on the sick list, 4 April 1876 at Singapore and discharged to the Civil Hosptial Singapore on 7 April 1876.

Folio 7: John Painter, aged 18; ordinary seaman; case number 34; disease or hurt, bubo sympathetic. Put on the sick list, 23 April 1876 at sea near Singapore. Discharged to Hospital at Hong Kong on 6 June 1876.

Folio 7: William Stiff, aged 27; leading seaman; case number 35; disease or hurt, submersion. Put on sick list on 5 May 1876 whilst on leave. Having fallen overboard whilst coming off ship and taken by the police to the Civil Hospital Singapore where he was discharged on 8 May 1876 with slight bruises.

Folio 7: Thomas McCarthy, aged 39, carpenter's mate; case number 36; disease or hurt, rheumatism. Put on the sick list, 14 May 1876 and required prolonged treatment in bed and therefore discharged to Civil hospital, Singapore on 15 May 1876.

Folio 7: William Carvey, aged 25, ordinary seaman; case number 37; disease or hurt, bubo. Put on the sick list, 20 May 1876 at Singapore having contracted gonorrhoea there. Discharged to hospital on arriving at Yokohama at 29 June 1876.

Folio 7: George Campling, aged 21, ordinary seaman; case number 38; disease or hurt, contusion. Put on the sick list, 6 June 1876 and discharged to Hospital in Hong Kong on 6 June 1876. Injury happened when sailor was sitting on a broken chair on forecastle and leaned back and jammed his right ring finger between the broken parts. Incident happened when surgeon was away so sent immediately to hospital.

Folio 8: John Gaul, aged 43, ship’s steward; case number 39; disease or hurt, apoplexy. Put on the sick list, 18 June 1876. Patient was found lying in his usual sleeping place but talking incoherently, with a cold skin, weak pulse and a breath decidedly alcoholic. He died within hours of being admitted to sick bay from strong convulsions. An autopsy was performed six and half hours afterwards and his brain was found slightly congested and with considerable effusion at the bases, also in the ventricles. The deceased was a stout, florid and flabby looking man who had recently suffered from gout. He was very much addicted to intemperate habits and although on two occasions in this ship after severe warnings from his superiors he had attempted total abstinence without success.

Folio 8: Robert Gittings, aged 36, stoker; case number 40; disease or hurt, debility. Put on the sick list, 19 June 1876 due to debility caused by faulty assimilation of food due to dyspepsia produced by loss of teeth. Discharged to hospital at Yokohama on 5 July 1876.

Folio 8: Samuel May, aged 33, painter; case number 41; disease or debility, dysentery. Put on sick list at Yokohama on 19 July 1876 and discharged to sick quarters at Yokohma on 26 July 1876.

Folio 9: John Pearce, aged 24, stoker; case number 42; disease or debility, phthisis incipent. Put on the sick list, 11 July 1876 with debility and cough. He stated he had been coughing up pustrulent and sometimes bloody fluid doe weeks. Discharged to royal navy sick quarters, Yokohama on 26 July 1876.

Folio 9: James Pengelly, aged 37, leading stoker; case number 43; disease or debility, debility (stricture). Put on sick list, 18 September 1876 and discharged to sick quarters in Yokohama on 19 September 1876. Whilst he was being treated he admitted that he had a stricture for which he was then treated by the medical officer in charge.

Folio 9: John Henwood, aged 39, caulker's mate; case number 44; disease or hurt, syphilis. Put on the sick list, 4 October 1876. Stated it was contracted three weeks previously at Yokohama. Discharged to sick quarters in Yokohama on 5 October 1876.

Folio 9: Henry Northmore, aged 18, ordinary seaman; case number 45; disease or hurt, bubo. Put on sick list on 11 September 1876 with syphilic induced bubo. Discharged to sick quarters in Yokohma on 12 September 1876.

Folio 9: Mark Taylor, aged 21, ordinary seaman; case number 46; disease or hurt, pneumonia. Put on sick list, 8 September 1876 with violent cold, pain in chest and pneumonia of the lower right lung was discovered. Discharged 8 September 1876 to sick quarters in Yokohama.

Folio 9: Joseph Bamford, aged 34; leading seaman; case number 47; disease or hurt, debility and diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 30 August 1876 with debility resulting from several late intractable attacks of diarrhoea. Patient had lost 27lbs in three months. Discharged for further treatment on 12 September 1876.

Folio 9: William Hancock, aged 27; able seaman; case number 48; disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 17 August 1876 and discharged to sick quarters in Yokohama on 17 August 1876. Had attack of dysentery at Perak at start of year but had returned to duty only to get diarrhoea later with a good deal of prostration and therefore was moved to sick quarters to allow careful dieting and treatment of patient.

Folios 9-10: William Hayward, aged 17, able seaman; case number 49; disease or hurt, bronchitis. Put on the sick list 14 August 1876 after contracting bronchitis in Yokohama. Discharged to sick quarters in Yokohama on 17 August 1876.

Folio 10: William H Marshall, aged 25, assistant engineer; case number 50; disease or hurt, gonorrhoea and bubo. Put on the sick list, 7 August 1876 for gonorrhoea contracted a few weeks before in Kobe. Discharged to sick quarters in Yokohama on 7 August 1876.

Folio 10: Edward Manning, aged 26, leading stoker; case number 51; disease or hurt, wound of face. Put on sick list on 3 August 1876 whilst in Yokohama. Received superficial wound on left side of face and taken by police to sick quarters in Yokohama. Discharged to duty on the 3 August 1876.

Folio 10: Sam Ah, aged, about 30, Chinese carpenter's mate; case number 52; disease or hurt, dysentery. Put on sick list, 19 July 1876 and discharged on 26 July 1876 to he sick quarters at Yokohama.

Folio 10: Peter King, aged 39, quartermaster; case number 53; disease or hurt, debility. Put on the sick list, 25 July 1876. Had been losing flesh and had a considerable cough. Had reported himself unfit for diving on account of the dyspusea that he always suffered in the process. Discharged to sick quarters Yokohama on 31 July 1876.

Folio 10: George Richards, aged 22, able seaman; case number 54; disease or hurt, febriela. Put on the sick list, 19 July 1876 at Kobe and discharged to sick quarters in Yokohama on 26 July 1876. Whilst under hospital treatment a syphilitic roserla made an appearance. He had previously been under treatment for the disease between 12 June and 29 June 1876 having contracted it in Singapore.
