Description:
Content: Folios 28-29. Letter from S P Peters, Churchwarden, and John Doble, Overseer, both of the parish of Filley [Philleigh] in the Truro Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission, seeking advice in the matter of the rates to be paid on a property in the parish formerly let by the Reverend John Peters to William O'Levy, Amos Arscot and Joseph Williams. Following a re-arrangement, one house is now sub-let by William O'Levy to Joseph Williams who refuses to pay the rate, and is therefore summoned before the petty sessions. The justices would not enforce the rate on Joseph Williams as the whole of the premises is let to William O'Levy. The writers ask if they are right in assessing Joseph Williams for rates or if William O'Levy should be assessed for the whole property. They add that William O'Levy does not reside in the parish, and Joseph Williams is well able to pay but has been excused from payment of the arrears by the justices. Annotated: seek information whether Joseph Williams occupies the house and land for which he is rated. Paper Number: 5631/A/1847. Poor Law Union Number 57. Counties: Cornwall.
