The series contains files relating to schemes of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries to improve the quality of both hill farms and hill farm livestock. The HF series was raised in 1946 following that year's Hill Farming Act to deal with grants for capital improvements for mountain, hill and heath farm land, but has also been used in conjunction with grants for improving upland livestock under the Livestock Rearing Act 1951 and other later livestock improvement schemes. It contains material on the Hill Farming Advisory Committee.

In 1957 HF files dealing with the Hill Cow Subsidy and the Hill Sheep Schemes were re-registered into MAF 277
