Description:
Content: Folios 304-305. Letter from James Robinson Tomlin, Clerk to the Guardians of the Reeth Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Board, regarding the workhouse dietary tables and making reference to the last paragraph of the Board's letter of 7 April [1868], stating that he believed the Board already have the dietary table for able-bodied paupers as proposed to be altered but is sending another copy. He states that peas are given as a pudding and not dried and is not an unusual article of diet amongst the people where these paupers originate when potatoes and bread cannot be obtained. He also comments on oatmeal pottage and the suet in pudding and that milk can be obtained for children for supper. The necessary alterations can be made on tables. Annotated: it is not desirable that alternative diets of peas or potatoes should be allowed three times a week and suggests it be limited to once a week. Also state that in the opinion of the Board tea with bread and butter should be allowed to all aged and infirm or at least to those who prefer it to porridge. Allow children a sweet sauce with suet pudding as is allowed to other classes. ES [Edward Smith, MD, Inspector] 23 July. Paper Number: 28126/1868. Poor Law Union Number 555.
