Content: Folios 57-60. Note from A Power [Alfred Power, Assistant Poor Law Commissioner] to the Poor Law Commission, enclosing details of the first meeting of the Keighley Poor Law Union. Included: letter from George Spencer [Clerk to the Guardians of the Keighley Poor Law Union] to Alfred Power informing him that the contents of his letter [not included] had been considered by the guardians at their meeting and enclosing the minutes of the meeting. The division of the union has been postponed until the next meeting in the hope that Mr Power would be able to attend and offer advice. His postscript states that the meeting was peaceful as usual. 6 July 1838. Included: minutes of meeting of the board of guardians of the Keighley Poor Law Union held on 6 July 1838. William Ellis presided. Present were William Ellis, Frederick Greenwood, Joseph Greenwood and William Busfeild, James Mitchell, Hiram Craven, John Pickard, Thomas Holmes, Samuel Sharp, James Hulbert, William England, Thomas Chapman, Thomas Farnell, James Greenwood, William Greenwood, John Bailey, William Spencer, John Rishworth. It was decided that future meetings would be held every Wednesday at the Mechanics' Institution in Keighley. Also that the overseers of the poor in the several townships should continue to administer relief until further notice from the guardians. Henry Alcock, Banker, was appointed Treasurer of the Keighley Poor Law Union, with such security as required by the guardians. The appointment of officers and the division of the union into districts was deferred. The marriage notice of James Morton was read. Paper Number: 6707/A/1838. Poor Law Union Number 571.
