Description:
Content: Folios 31-33. Letter from Harry White, Clerk to the Guardians of the Blything Poor Law Union, to Edwin Chadwick, Secretary to the Poor Law Commission. He is directed to send to the Commission a copy of a letter addressed by Mr Cox, the Solicitor of Mr Alcock, who has brought an 'action against Mr Saunders as... of the brig Allendale' to recover the 'Head Money' paid by Captain Alcock, Master, upon disembarkation at Quebec [Canada] having sailed from Lowestoft Roads. White seeks advice from the Commission and asks what papers in the contract between the guardians and Mr Saunders in the possession of the guardians should be supplied to Mr Cox. White reminds the Commission that Saunders applied to the guardians for the head money over and above his original contract but the guardians resisted. He advises the Commission that Saunders has abandoned his claim in a letter dated 6 April to the Reverend Stephen Clissold. The extract states that he regrets the misunderstanding about the 'Poll Tax for Allendale and Albion' last year. He has been shown a report from the government agent, which said that the captain sold spirits to the emigrants and that was sufficient reason for him to withhold payment to him. Mr Cox intends to give notice of trial for the first sitting in the Trinity Term, 31 May. He requests immediate attention by the Commissioners. Copy of a letter from Thomas B Cox, London, 18 May 1837 to Messrs White and [B--s]. Mr Cox alleges that Mr Saunders has defaulted on payment of 'Head Money' payable at Quebec and all expenses of passengers either on this side or at Quebec. He alleges that Mr Saunders has made various frivolous excuses for not paying the money and Captain Alcock has had to resort to law to get his money. Mr Cox would like copies of correspondence that has passed between the guardians of the Blything Poor Law Union and the department or with Mr White. He intends to give notice for trial for the first sitting of the Triity Term, starting 31 May, and wishes to serve papers on Mr White and any other witness who can produce the contract made with Saunders. He wants a quick reply and the Commission's charges will be paid. Annotated 'Immediate. Mr Parker [Henry Walter Parker, Assistant Secretary to the Poor Law Commission], 25 May'. Paper Number: 4630/A/1837. Poor Law Union Number 432. Counties: Suffolk.
