Description:

Folio 54. Report of a visit made by the Commissioners of Lunacy to the Southwell Workhouse. The visiting commissioner is Mr Wilkes. The report states that the Medical Officer is Dr Calvert and that he visits three times a week. There are 3 males and 7 females in the workhouse who are of unsound mind and are all of a class at present proper for treatment there. Four are placed in the Infirmary and the remainder are mixed with the ordinary inmates in the body of the house. Reference is made to their diet, to the satisfactory state of their rooms, and to their kind treatment.

A book of printed certificates under the 20th section of the Act has been procured but no certificate has been filled in since 2 June, although 2 patients have been admitted. Mention is made of Caroline Neale, an epileptic patient, who is still there.
