Description:
Content: Folios 108-109. Letter from James Robinson Tomlin, Clerk to the Guardians of the Reeth Poor Law Union, to N Edward Hurst [Norman Edward Hurst], Poor Law Inspector, stating that the weekly returns in which the Board observed inaccuracies were entrusted to and prepared by the relieving officer of the union. The clerk pointed out that the Board is aware of the peculiar position in the union. The clerk, a professional gentleman, resides 11 miles from Reeth, and hence his time at the meetings was very fully occupied with other issues and the duties of his office. He therefore thought that the compilation of the return could safely be entrusted to that officer who was in charge of those duties relating to the return. This appeared to have been unwise, and he would in future make the returns himself. He apologised for the inaccuracies. Annotated: to Mr Harries [T Harries, Clerk, Junior division] 23 January 1855. That the receiving officer be asked to explain. Also: the clerk had responded and promised to take measures to prevent similar errors. Returns corrected and deposited 29 January [1855]. Paper Number: 2863/1855. Poor Law Union Number 555. Counties: Yorkshire North Riding.
