Content: Folio 77. Draft letter from the Poor Law Board, headed 'Enquiry into the conduct of the Master', to J R Tomlin [James Robinson Tomlin, Clerk to the Guardians of Reeth Poor Law Union], stating that they have received a report from Hurst [Norman Edward Hurst, Poor Law Inspector], into the enquiry of the 7 July into the allegations of cruelty by William Hills, Workhouse Master. The report, they feel, raises serious doubts about Hills' ability to do the job. Before removing him from office the Board seeks the view of the Reeth board of guardians as to whether they consider him fit to continue in his position. Paper Number: 26499/1854.
