| Custodial history: | By the time of his retirement in 1901, Maurice Hewlett was in possession of a considerable quantity of papers, accumulated by the family firm in the course of its private record agency business. The precise order of events is not clear, but it appears likely that this material had come into Hewlett's hands by the mid-1890s, and thus to have been caught up in the move of the Office of Land Revenue Records and Enrolments from its original premises at 6 Whitehall to St Stephen's House, Victoria Embankment. On his retirement, Hewlett made some attempt to divide the mass of correspondence, papers, reports and associated documents, removing those which he believed to relate to private business, and leaving behind official material. The papers which remained in official custody, first in the Land Revenue Record Office and, from 1903, in the Public Record Office, now form the present series. |
