This series contains selected case files from the Private Office of the Department of Employment and its predecessors. The files include correspondence with the Prime Minister and other ministers, other government departments, Members of Parliament, private individuals and officials of organisations, including the Trades Union Congress (TUC) and Confederation of British Industry (CBI), on matters of national policy as well as of particular grievances by individuals, employment associations and employment sectors. The grievances mainly concern working conditions, pay and individual's search for employment.

A wide range of issues of national policy are covered, such as: the employment and training of women; the employment and rates of pay of disabled persons; unemployment policy and statistics; national strikes, such as strikes by London Dockers and Post Office Workers; the employment of Poles in the engineering industry; National Service; industrial policy in different regions; working conditions in different sectors; and trade unionism.
