Description:

Report of the Mayor of Portsmouth [signature illegible] on 1 collective petition (22 people of Plymouth including the vicar and churchwardens of Saint Andrews in Plymouth, Devon) on behalf of Sarah Dunn convicted at the 'last Easter Sessions' held for the Borough of Plymouth, for stealing French silk shawls and various other goods, property of Ann Gillman from Guernsey. Dunn had conspired with her son-in-law, John Brown to impersonate a customs house officer and to confiscate the goods as 'contraband'. Grounds for clemency: the prisoner is on board the hospital ship 'Alonzo' at Woolwich, is near death, feels the loss of the comforts and consolations of the society, has a distressed mind, is pinning for the kindness and aid of her children and wishes that her sentence is commuted to imprisonment for the period of her sentence. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation Recommendation: speaks against mercy. Folios 13-15.
