This series contains the early records of the Royal Commission. They include registers of correspondence, drafts of reports, correspondence and papers for Commissioners' meetings and files of the Commission's correspondence. The correspondence covers all aspects of the Commission's work. Subjects covered include the location of archives and their safety, especially in wartime; publications; the setting up of the National Register of Archives including the minutes and papers of the Master of the Rolls Archives Committee; and the reconstitution of the Commission in 1959. Also included are the copies of the Commission's estimates for the early part of this century: these include interleaved correspondence and notes. |

Although the list includes some former reference numbers, this material was not registered while it was with the HMC. The numbers reflect a proposed arrangement prior to transfer to the Public Record Office. Much of the correspondence is arranged under the individual correspondent or institution concerned; these include national and local record offices as well as government departments. |
