Administrative / biographical background:

The early history of the Information Division is not clear. There had been a unit responsible for supplying information and liaising with the press since 1903. Originally this was regarded as a separate division attached to External Relations Branch or one of its predecessors but from time to time responsibility for the division was transferred to other branches within the department. It was not until the mid-1980s that the division was regarded as large and important enough to be recognised as a separate branch in its own right.

The division's responsibilities covered ministerial briefing, preparing of films and other publicity material, arranging departmental exhibitions at conferences, liaising with the press and arranging the printing of departmental publications.

For most of its existence the division had overall responsibilty for the department's press office.
