Administrative / biographical background:

The Committee on Social Studies was established by Mr R A Butler, First Secretary of State, in June 1963 under the chairmanship of Lord Heyworth. Its terms of reference were: "To review the research at present being done in the field of social studies in Government departments, universities and other institutions and to advise whether changes are needed in the arrangements for supporting and co-ordinating this research."

The first meeting was held on 10 July 1963 and the last on 9 February 1965. The Committee's report to the Secretary of State for Education and Science was published in June 1965 (Cmnd. 2660).
