Administrative / biographical background:

The coincidence of the appearance of the Pipa files in the year of the appointment of a reforming Treasurer suggests that they may owe their inception to the energies of Ralph, Lord Cromwell (1394?-1456). They probably continued as a separate series until the 1570s.
