Title: | Exchequer: Lord Treasurer's Remembrancer: Bills of Proffers |
Description: |
Files recording the appearance at the Exchequer of sheriffs, escheators, and liberty holders, including bishops and mayors of corporate boroughs, for the payment of their proffers. Appearance was either in person or by attorney. Proffers were made twice yearly, in Michaelmas and Easter terms, and were the payments collected to date of the ancient farms of the county, of summonses of the pipe and the green wax, and of other debts. The formal record of appearance, together with the amount of the proffer, was entered under the Adventus vicecomitum section on the memoranda rolls of both remembrancers; and payments are recorded in the pipe and receipt rolls. The files contain occasional strays from other file series. |
