Administrative / biographical background:

The Extraction of Metals Group was transferred from the National Chemical Laboratory to Warren Spring Laboratory in May 1964 following a recommendation of the Committee on Technical Assistance for Overseas Geology and Mining. The Laboratory's research into chemical and pyrometallurgical processing was considerably widened. Principal new programmes included the study of electro-deposition processes and chemical reations in fused salt media, the heat treatment of refractory ores to facilitate chemical processing, and bacterial leaching of ores.
