Description:

This series consists of draft orders and decrees issued during equity proceedings heard before the Court of Duchy Chamber.

From at least the reign of Henry VIII, substantial orders, final orders and decrees were first recorded in draft form before being entered in the registers found in DL 5. Drafts of procedural orders were not prepared.

Arrangement:

The series is arranged in a chronological series of 143 boxed items. For the reigns of Henry VII, Edward VI and Philip and Mary the draft decrees for the whole reign are contained in one or more boxes. For the period from the beginning of the reign of Elizabeth I to the end of the reign of William III the records of each regnal year are for the most part in separate boxes. for some years they are spread across a number of boxes. Conversely, on a number of occasions the records of two or more consecutive regnal years are contained in the same box. Within each file the documents are largely unsorted.

OBS 1/512 is a book of miscellaneous references to Duchy records arranged in counties, drawn up by Benjamin Ayloffe, clerk of the Duchy, in 1692. One section (pp. 195-225) is a selective calendar of decrees and orders for the period from Edward IV to Charles I, and it includes references to some draft decrees. There is a transcript of this on the open shelves.
