Administrative / biographical background:

The first computer system delivered to Bureau West (BuWest) was accepted and brought into full user service in December 1976. At the end of 1983 the first (and last) Bureau West report was written.

On 1 January 1984, BuWest amalgamated with Defence Data Processing Service (Def DPS), together with the small systems capability of Defence Administrative Computer Division (DACD) 7 to create the Directorate of Central Computer Services, a powerful central facility for the exploitation of all aspects of computing and communications in the information technology area.

The directorate occupied two locations: Bureau London which consisted of offices and computer suites in the Old War Office and Metropole Buildings, and BuWest which was similarly spread between the sites at Horton Road and Le Marchant Barracks in Devizes.
