Administrative / biographical background:

The Rural Industries Bureau was established in 1923 to undertake research into, provide information about and give advice and training to rural industries. It was funded by the Development Commission and trustees were appointed by the Ministry of Agriculture and other associated government departments. Most of the bureau's work was in English counties, and it operated primarily through a network of Rural Community Councils.

In 1969 the Rural Industries Bureau merged with the Rural Industries Loan Fund to create the Council for Small Industries in Rural Areas (COSIRA).
