| Administrative / biographical background: |
The Transvaal was occupied by Boers from the Cape in 1837 during the Great Trek. In 1852 it was recognised as independent, but it consisted of several communities until they were united and formed into the South African Republic in 1858. In 1877 the territory was annexed to Britain. It was restored to independence under British suzerainty in 1881. In 1900 it was again annexed by Britain. In 1910 it became a province of the new Union of South Africa. |
