Catalogue description Palatinate of Chester: Exchequer of Chester: Entry Books and Minute Books of Decrees and Orders, and Rule Books

This series consists of volumes, many in their original bindings relating to equity proceedings in the Exchequer Court of the Palatinate of Chester between the reign of Elizabeth I and George IV. The series is made up of entry books of decrees and orders, entry books of decrees and orders on confessions, minute books of decrees and orders and rule books. The language of the orders is English. However, Latin is used for headings and some annotations until 1733 when English became the official legal language.

CHES 14/1-3, 9, 17, 23 and 30-34 have internal indexes. The suits are arranged alphabetically according to the plaintiff's name, although each entry also names the defendant. It should be noted that in suits where there is more than one plaintiff or defendant only the first are listed in the index. As not all the volumes in this series have been examined prior to the writing of this note it is possible that other volumes also contain indexes.
