A mix of patent, fine, surrender, recognisance, fees, fealty, rule, memoranda, decree and close rolls, and of enrolments of proceedings, writs, orders, cancellations, compositions, commissions and estreats.

The contents of these documents include

  • Charles II's repudiation of any marriage to the mother of the Duke of Monmouth, and James II's attestations to the authenticity of the birth of a son to his consort Mary Beatrice in 1688;
  • the Declaration of Rights of 1689, and William of Orange's answer to it;
  • Parliament pawns, of which there are originals in C 218;
  • parliamentary proceedings against the Jacobite Duke of Ormonde in 1715;
  • compositions for depopulation by enclosing landlords in the East Midlands, 1635-1638;
  • lists of subsidy commissioners for England and Wales, 1550-1625;
  • writs of recovery from deceased Crown debtors in the last half of Elizabeth I's reign;
  • estreats from the Irish Exchequer of subsidies paid by the Irish nobility between 1635 and 1641.
