BT 283/84 is an alphabetically arranged index which indicates the company number of canal companies.

Administrative / biographical background:

Under s.39 of the Railway and Canal Act 1888 every canal company was required to send to the Registrar of Joint Stock Companies a return stating the name of the company, a short description of their canal, the name of the Principal Officer and the place of their office, or if more than one office, the name of their principal office. S.39 of the 1888 Act was repealed by s.24(4) of the Transport Act 1962.
