Administrative / biographical background:

An advisory committee to the Department of Overseas Trade was set up in 1918 at the same time as the department. It consisted of representatives of financial, commercial, and industrial interests, and its purpose was to consider matters referred by the department. In March 1930 it was merged with the newly-formed Overseas Trade Development Council, which was appointed by the secretary for overseas trade to promote, in conjunction with commercial interests, British trade overseas. It apparently ceased to function on the outbreak of the Second World War.
