In 1794 Admiral George Murray recommended to the Admiralty the construction of a dockyard in Bermuda. Ireland Island was selected for that purpose and work was begun in January 1810. Bermuda increased in strategic importance during the American War of 1812-1815. At the end of that war it was decided to close down the Yard at Antigua and establishments there were transferred to Bermuda, making it the central depot of the Leeward Islands and North America Station. In 1857 HMS Terror was allocated for the defence of Bermuda; her Commanding Officer had the additional style and title of Naval Officer-in-Charge of Naval Establishments. HMS Terror was depot ship, Bermuda, until 1914. For reasons of economy the dockyard and other naval establishments in Bermuda were closed on 31 March 1951. |
