In 1970 the Housing and Planning Inspectorate of the former Ministry of Housing and Local Government was incorporated within the new Department of The Environment; in 1971 'Housing' was dropped from the title. The Planning Inspectorate was responsible for public local inquiries, hearings and inspections under the Town and Country Planning, Housing, Highways, Acquisition of Land, New Towns, National Parks and Access to the Countryside and Land Compensation Acts.
