The Engineering Industries Directorate (EID) was responsible for overall aerospace and defence industry policy including: aerospace strategy and trade policy; restructuring of the aerospace and defence industries; DTI/MoD relations and the DTI's interest in defence procurement issues; promoting the competitiveness of fixed wing aircraft including Airbus; the helicopter, aeroengine, aerostructures and light aircraft sectors; aerospace and defence equipment industries, land systems and ordnance; policy on exports and export strategy for the aerospace industry; and provides the Secretariat for the Aerospace Committee. The Directorate was previously known as Engineering, Automotive and Metals Directorate (EAM) and the Vehicles, Metals and Minerals Division (VMM).
