Administrative / biographical background:

The decision to construct a large scale experimental fast breeder reactor was announced by the Minister of Works, Sir David Eccles, in 1954. The Dounreay site was opened in 1955 and three reactors were built over the next 20 years: the Dounreay Fast Reactor (DFR), Prototype Fast Reactor (PFR) and the Dounreay Materials Test Reactor (DMTR). The reactors were closed down in 1994 and are being decommissioned. Prior to 1 April 2008, DSRL was managed by the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA).
