The Energy Technology Support Unit was set up in 1974 as an agency operated by UKAEA on behalf of the Department of Energy. Its function was to manage research programmes on renewable energy and energy conservation.

The majority of projects managed by ETSU were carried out by external organisations in academia and industry.

In 1996, ETSU became part of AEA Technology plc which was separated from the UKAEA by privatisation.
