Administrative / biographical background:

The European Integration Department (External) was formed in 1973, during the run up to the UK's accession to the European Economic Community (EEC), although a separate file series was not established for the department until 1976. It dealt with matters involving European political cooperation and the Community's relations with third countries and with western countries outside the EEC. In 1980 it became the European Community Department (External) and in 1994 the European Union Department (External).
