Administrative / biographical background: |
The CHN series was used by the Home Office Children's Department which had responsibility for a wide range of issues relating to children, including guardianship, adoption, emigration, juvenile courts, remand and attendance centres. The Home Office passed the majority of responsibilities and files relating to the care of children to the Department of Health and Social Security in 1971. However the Home Office retained responsibility for policy in relation to the treatment of young offenders and the relevant CHN files continued to be used by the Prison Department. This series contains files in the CHN series which remained in use at the Home Office after the transfer of other CHN files to the DHSS. |
