Administrative / biographical background:

Works in the Tate's collections were originally stored in the basement of the Millbank building. As the collections increased in size so too did the need for space to house them. From the 1960s onwards a number of solutions to this problem were sought, including use of a store at Gorst Road in Acton and the sharing of offsite storage with other national museums and galleries. During the 1990s the Tate took a definitive step towards securing its future storage needs with the development of a state of the art facility in Southwark.
