Charterail was formed in 1990 as a joint venture between the British Railways Board, GKN Industrial Systems and City institutions. It hired locomotives and leased wagons from British Rail to operate freight services and had some success moving soft goods such as food and drink. Although it gained customers after the withdrawal of Speedlink in July 1991 it faced increasing financial difficulties and ceased operations in August 1992. |
