Administrative / biographical background:

The Joint Intelligence Bureau (JIB), as originally constituted, consisted only of what was to become its Economic and General Division after the incorporation of the Directorate of Scientific Intelligence into JIB in 1954, and then later (circa 1960-61) became the Division of Joint Services and Economic Intelligence (DJSEI).

DJSEI comprised 3 Branches : R (Requirements) Branch - providing common services to all 3 Divisions of JIB, J (Joint Services) Branch and E (Economics) Branch. It was principally concerned with the study of all those aspects of the economic and industrial infrastructure of foreign countries which were relevant to their strengths and weaknesses and their vulnerabilities in peace and was together with details of terrain and climate and their effect on military operations, the capacities and capabilities of transportation systems, airfields and air defences, telecommunications systems, health and targeting.
