Administrative / biographical background:

The earliest records were created by the Urban and Regional Professional 'C' Division within the Directorate General of Economic Planning. In 1971 this division became the responsibility of the Urban and Professional Group within the newly-established Department of the Environment. By January 1972 the division had been split: one part formed a new division dealing with London and the South East; the other part became Planning Urban Project Appraisal Division 3 of the Planning Urban Project Appraisal Directorate, which continued in existence until 1976.
