Administrative / biographical background: |
The Chief Officer (New Works) originated at the beginning of the Railway Executive of the British Transport Commission. In 1957 the function was performed by a Principal Works and Equipment Officer under the Chief of General Duties. This post was retitled Chief Officer New Works in 1962. From 1963 to 1965, under the British Railways Board, the Chief Officer (New Works) was placed within the Technical Departments. In 1965 the function was within the Planning and New Works Departments which had various names until 1968 when the Chief Officer (New Works) became a departmental head in his own right. Between 1970 and 1977 the function was placed under the Controller of Corporate Finance (in 1974 the title Chief Officer (new Works) was changed to Principal, Corporate Works). In 1977 the Rail New Works Officer was placed under the Chief Planning Officer within the Directorate of Planning and Investment. In 1978 he was put under the Chief Investment Officer in Finance and Planning, Computing Services and Operational Research. The function then remained under Financial Planning until the end of the BRB. |
